Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions
We've broken down some topics that we thought might be asked by those curious about how the game runs, applications, and what sort of things they should expect. As always, if you don't see it here, feel free to ask below and we will address it!
Out of Character Questions
Is there a Test Drive Meme? How often?
Yes, there is a TDM! And we would love to see you there: join us. New TDMs will go up every season, i.e. Summer & Winter Solstice and Vernal & Autumnal Equinox.
I heard something about invites. How do those work?
Players get one (1) invite each month. They will have to go to the invites page and give the link to the person they want to join, who will place it in the right spot on their app and the reserves page. People who have the mods on plurk only need to list the name of the mod they know.
Will you have Cast Caps or Character Caps?
None of us really like cast caps, so we won’t be dealing with that. Character caps are a different story. While the game itself won’t have a cap on the amount of players or characters that we’ll have in it, we are limiting players to three characters. The option to purchase more slots (with activity proof) will be available once you’ve been in the game longer than four months.
What is activity check (AC)?
We've decided to go with a check-in system for monthly AC. The Handmaiden would like a "love letter" each month, telling her everything about how you like or hate here and what you're doing with your time. Yes, she's watching you, but that doesn't matter, does it?. She will take these into consideration going forward.
Rewards you say?
Yes, rewards will work two ways. 1) Every comment made by your character will count as 1 berry. 2) Participation in events will earn you an audience with the Handmaiden. Please check the Rewards Page for a more comprehensive explanation.
Setting Questions
How do characters get here?
Characters arrive via enchanted Mushroom Rings on their normal plane of existence. They were temporarily charmed by the whispered promises and colors of the Rings and found themselves in a small clearing of a bright and bizarrely hued forest, with a path forward. If they step off of the path, the forest will drag them inside it. They will wake up later, covered in strange markings, again on the path. That will continue until they go down the path.
What happens when characters first show up?
If they stay on the path, players will be approached by small, androgynous faeries that coax them down the marked path towards a village. There, they will be handed silver hand mirrors by the Queens’ handmaidens and ushered as a group for an explanation for why they’re here.
How does time work?
Time is a weird soup, to quote a certain faun, especially here in the Fae realm. It appears to follow a similar pattern of the Earth year cycle, but while you’re here, time back home will stop. You could live a whole life here and time back home will not have changed when you return. If you ever return.
How do you communicate with others?
The mirrors will be used to communicate with those by “Video”. Think of the magic mirrors of fairy tales. The surface of the mirror will act as a touch screen of limited usage. By telling it that you want to send a written message to a specific person or to everyone in general, a touch screen keyboard will appear. When you have a message, your mirror will flash brightly five times an hour until the message is checked. A little envelope icon will appear near the bottom of your mirror. Tapping the icon or telling the mirror to “reply” will open your message and keyboard. Anonymous messages are possible, but don’t be surprised if the fae creatures rat you out. And there are text-to-speech options for those who need it. The Handmaiden will assign a helper fae to go over all that when you arrive.
Can I break my mirror? What happens if I do?
You absolutely can break your mirror. It might be enchanted, but the surface is made out of glass, after all. And, well, in case that it breaks, you can always ask the Handmaiden for a replacement. She'll give you one, but for a price. What that is depends on how she's feeling.
Can you leave?
Leaving on your own is not possible. If you win over the Sidhe Queens, they might agree to send you home with the treasures and riches you deserve. Or if you are too violent or too annoying, you will be returned home with no rewards and a mark on your hand, letting all the fae know that you caused trouble. Of course, there are those fae that break the rules. If your character is determined to go home, maybe they’d be willing to make deals with more shady fae...
Is there a language barrier?
Nope. For some reason, you can understand everyone through verbal communication. The Fae magic that permeates the entire place auto-translates. Messages written via the mirrors are also automatically translated into a common language. However, it is possible to write messages in other languages, i.e. Dwarven, Klingon, Wookiee, etc., and send secrets to anyone who can understand it. So long as it’s done on something other than the mirrors.
What is the technology level?
Since this is a realm ruled almost exclusively by magic, most technology doesn’t work. With some finagling, you *might* be able to get smaller items to work via a magical source. The older the tech, the easier it is: Victrola/gramophones work better than an MP3 player or smartphone, for instance.
What will my character do about money? Housing? Work?
In the Fae Realm, berries are currency. You can use them to purchase things from the Handmaiden and to barter with the other faeries. There are many housing options, including the right to purchase & build your own domicile. As for work, well, do you want to run a shop/farm/go to war with outside factions to gain favor?
Wait, berries?
Yes, berries. Sadly not just any berries, so don’t get ideas about getting rich quick because you found a blueberry patch. Berries are earned through comments made by your character. Generally, one comment = one berry, however there are multipliers that may sometimes be involved based on events or rewards.
So, I see that there are Summer and Winter Queens. Are there factions?
No, there are no factions. This particular domain is under the protection of the Handmaiden. While she serves the queens, this space is a safe zone from either court.
Can I choose to serve a court?
Neither court is currently accepting outsiders to bolster their ranks. Players are free to talk to whomever they want, with some sort of caution. Faeries are known to bend the truth for their own ends after all.
How are you handling hiatuses/canon updates?
When you need to hiatus/update, you can have your characters go about their day to day lives, take a long nap like Rip Van Winkle, or one of the fae can abscond with them for a while and then bring them back. (Might account for any sort of strange physical/mental changes your character has now. All that delicious trauma!)
What's your policy about canon updates?
We are holding canon updates to the same rules of applying characters from media: at least thirty days since the release of your canon point and you have to tag/warn for any spoilers.
Can my character die? What happens if I die?
The Fae Realm is a very dangerous place to be, so you can assume that sometimes the things that go down can and will be lethal. If your character dies, strange markings will appear on their limbs. For every new set of markings, the fae will find it harder and harder to gather your essence back to your form and it will take longer for you to come back. Eventually, they might not be able to gather enough. So, you might want to avoid it. (And, yes, this means that if your character stepped off the path before the fairies came to escort them to the village, they died.)
What happens to dropped characters?
Dropped characters can be handled a few ways. Your character can trade all of their berries and one precious item to be returned to their world, but with the option of being brought back at any time. They can complete quests that allow them to go home, but with the same caveat. They can get lost in the woods and assumed lost for all time to the realm. Or they can die and the magic loses their essence.
Application Questions
How often are apps? Monthly? Bi-monthly?
Applications are on an open basis. We don't have an app cycle, since the game is small and comfy right now. This is subject to change. While you won’t need a reserve to apply to the game, an invite from a mod or current player IS necessary for both reserves and apps.
How do Reserves and Invites work then if there's no app cycle?
In regards to Reserves, those will be honored for ten (10) days before someone else is free to apply for the character in question. Invites will still be used, but we're going to allow the person they're for to have thirty (30) days after you put in the invite for them to use it for an app. What that means for you is that every month, you get ONE (1) invite for that month, but you can put it in at any time in that month's time frame and your friend has 30 days to apply. That means, hypothetically, you could have two active invites going at the same time, but we will be checking that.
How many characters can I app at one time?
You can app two (2) characters during one app cycle.
How many characters can I have in total?
You can have up to three (3) characters at any time. You can purchase up to two (2) more slots through Rewards with proof of activity after four (4) months of being in the game for a total of five (5) character slots.
Are there any age restrictions on Players?
All players must be 18 or older to join the game.
Are there age restrictions on characters?
Yes, there are. We allow child characters in game – the Fae love kidnapping children; it’s a whole thing – however characters must at least be school-aged or equivalent. Characters should be able to comprehend their surroundings and coherently communicate in some form or another, so no infants and toddlers.
How soon after a canon is released can I app a character?
We please ask that you wait at least one month from the localization/release until you attempt to app from a new canon. If you're apping from a canon that has a fansub or has scanlations because of no official release outside of the country or origin, please let us know. We ask that you mark your app for spoilers and consider making an opt-out post for those that want to avoid anything that will spoil it for them.
Can I app a malleable protagonist? (Wardens/Hawkes/Tavs/WOLs/etc.)
Yes! Malleable protagonists are allowed. We will only allow one malleable protagonist from each canon in game at any one time. Malleable protagonists will be asked to apply using the Original Character application so we can get a better understanding of who they are as a character.
Can I app an Original Character?
Yes! Original Characters are allowed. Original Characters also include characters made for larger pre-made systems/universes such as Dungeons & Dragons Characters, World of Warcraft Characters, Vampire the Masquerade Characters, etc. Fandom Original Characters are not allowed.
Can I app an AU version of a character? What about duplicates?
Only Canon AU versions of characters are allowed. Exact duplicates of characters (the same characters from the same canon) are not allowed. However, if multiple versions of a character exist across multiple canons or Canon AUs, then up to three versions of a character may be in game at the same time. For example, if there were a Steve Rogers from MCU in the game, then a Steve Rogers from 616 Comics Canon could app as well as Steve Rogers from the Marvel What If series.
What about CRAUs?
We accept CRAU versions of characters, however any CRAU is limited to one previous game’s worth of memories and experiences only.
Can I app historical people?
Real people from history are not appable, unless they are a heavily fictionalized version. As an example, Abraham Lincoln is not applicable, but Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is. Mods reserve the right to deny applications for fictionalized historical people if they are offensive or otherwise inappropriate for the setting.
Can I app a non-humanoid character?
You can! With a few small tweaks. Any character that is mechanical/technological will be changed. Technology and magic do not get along, so in order for your character to survive in the Fae realm, they will be subtly remade. They may look very much like their canon selves but will be made from some more organic material – plant, fungus, enchanted earth, stone, etc. Characters too large to fit into human-sized structures will also be sized down. Non-humanoid characters can also be given a humanoid form, flesh and blood and ostensibly alive. Player’s choice. Please indicate which option you choose on your application.
Can I app a character from post death?
Sure can! Surprise, they’re alive again! How lucky. Any life threatening injuries will be healed, but whether your character is healed completely or just enough not to die immediately upon arrival is entirely up to you.
Character Questions
What does my character have with them when they arrive?
Characters only arrive with the clothes on their backs and the change in their pockets. Armor and weapons have mysteriously disappeared to keep mischievous little fae from getting them and hurting each other without permission. They can be purchased via rewards, but any Iron or Steel based items will mysteriously be changed to silver, bronze, copper, gold or titanium.
What about my powers?
Canon abilities will be nerfed completely to render everyone down to full human levels. Canon abilities may be earned back through rewards. The more you work with the fae, the better chance you have for being rewarded by the Queens’ handmaiden with what you want. Sounds easy, right?
What about regained powers?
So you miss having your magic or superhuman abilities? Cool. Luckily, the Fae love making bargains. Ask nicely and play nicely, as magical actions have magical consequences. Even once regained, powers will be slightly nerfed as follows: no game breaking, no physical destruction of an area bigger than one building, teleportation powers are limited to moving within the Fae Wild (Characters cannot generally teleport into the Summer or Winter Courts, though events may temporarily change this). Any mind-reading or mind/mood controlling powers will not be nerfed in character but require strict out of character consent from other player characters. The chances of mind reading or mind/mood control working on NPCs is very low for all but the lowest level Fae denizens.
Can I bring my pet?
Sadly, characters all arrive alone. However! Pets can be purchased via rewards points. In addition, participation in certain events will grant your character the right to petition the Handmaiden without rewards points payment.
My character has a special diet/can't be in the sun, etc.!
Okay, Astarion. Your character will find all special requirements to survive available for purchase and barter the same as any other sort of nutrition. And it’s a magical sun, so you won’t have to worry about burning up into a big pile of ash! Any other accommodations can be discussed, but you can generally assume that the fae will want to make sure their new…toys don’t die. Right away, that is.
Can I get down and dirty? What’s the policy for that?
Since this game is 18+, we know that some people are going to want to have sexy and smutty things. That’s fine. We only ask that you use appropriate warnings and labels for things. Minor characters under 16 should NOT be involved in any sexual situations . Anyone found breaking this rule will be punished accordingly.
Can I sleep with the fae/The Handmaiden/The Sidhe Queens?
Attempts to seduce any of the members of the Queens' courts will be denied. Probably for the best. I heard they've eaten past lovers. The other fae that roam in the Fae Wild will turn down players. You might want to just stick to the other players.
